New Massachusetts Sportsbooks Expected to Launch

Following the ESPN BET launch, it is unclear if and when any new Massachusetts sportsbooks are expected to go live. For now, the only new sportsbook expected to launch in Massachusetts is Bally Bet.

Bally Bet Massachusetts Sportsbook

Bally is known as a media brand and a casino operator, and now they are looking to expand the sports betting brand to Massachusetts by the end of the second quarter. Bally Bet Massachusetts received their legal sportsbook license, but is not expected to launch until June.

  • Expected Launch: June 2024 (Online/Mobile)

Other Potential New Sportsbooks in Massachusetts

While there are additional online sportsbooks like bet365 Massachusetts that are expanding in the US sports betting market, none have announced that they plan to go live in MA just yet.

Additionally, up until recently, it was expected that Betway Massachussetts would go live in 2024. However, the operator opted to not renew its attempts for a MA sports betting license, casting doubts that it would be live in the Bay State anytime soon. Theres a chance that Betway could change its stance on Massachusetts in the future.

As operators announce launch dates, we'll provide updates on new sportsbooks in Massachusetts. In addition to the above, there could up to five (5) new sportsbooks in Massachusetts. When sports betting was officially legalized in 2022, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission voted to allow up to 15 sports betting licenses to prospective sportsbooks in the state. With 10 licenses already issued, five spots remain.

Additionally, there's a chance that you could see a retail sportsbook at Suffolk Downs in East Boston. The historic thoroughbred racetrack has been approved for sports betting launch by the MGC, though no efforts have been made toward a sportsbook at the facility just yet.

Springfield Sports Betting

You can bet in Springfield at MGM Springfield. Backed by BetMGM, this is one of three Massachusetts sports betting locations. West of Worcester, it's an ideal destination for MA sports bettors from the likes of Northampton, Amherst and Pittsfield.

Foxborough Sports Betting

Just south of Foxborough and Gillette Stadium, anyone looking for in-person legal sports betting can go to Plainridge Park Casino. This is one of the retail locations licensed to operate in the state.

Does Gillette Stadium Have a Sportsbook?

No, Gillette Stadium does not have a sportsbook, but you can download mobile betting apps from Massachusetts sportsbooks, and place a bet while at the venue. If you're looking for New England Patriots odds and want to place a wager in-person, a short trip to Plainville will let you bet.

Which Sportsbooks Partner with Pro Sports Teams?

As soon as lawmakers voted to legalize online sports betting, and retail and mobile apps, several major professional sports teams in Massachusetts began to sign deals to partner with sportsbooks.

The Boston Bruins, Boston Red Sox, and Boston Celtics have all made deals with DraftKings to be their official Massachusetts sports betting partner. The teams plan on working with their partners to create an engaging fan experience.

Who Regulates Massachusetts Sports Gambling?

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) regulates and licenses retail, online and mobile sports betting in Massachusetts. They also oversee and regulate sports wagering at the state’s brick-and-mortar casinos. The MGC does not oversee all forms of gambling though; the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission regulates lottery games.

When Did Sports Betting Launch in Massachusetts?

Sports betting in Massachusetts initially launched on January 31, 2023 at three retail Massachusetts sportsbooks: Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Casino. The MA Gaming Commission approved this launch date for retail locations only, and those planning to launch online sports betting sites and mobile apps were required to wait until March.

On March 10, 2023, the three operators with retail sports betting licenses also began accepting bets from their mobile app and online site. Additionally, three other online betting brands launched Massachusetts online sportsbook sites and apps: DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars.

Massachusetts Sports Betting Licenses

The Massachusetts sports betting law allows for up to 15 licenses to be granted by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. Three types of licenses are available: Category 1, Category 2 and Category 3. Each license regardless of category requires application fees set at $200,000. The MA sports betting law states permanent licenses last for 5 years and cost $5 million, while temporary licenses last 1 year and cost $1 million.

🎰 Category 1Casinos + Mobile
πŸ‡ Category 2Racetracks + Mobile
πŸ“± Category 3Mobile Only
  • Category 1 Sports Betting License (Retail Sports Betting + Mobile/Online): The Category 1 Licenses in Massachusetts allow for retail sports betting at brick-and-mortar casinos in the state. The license also allows each casino to partner with as many as two mobile platforms, but those platforms must receive a Category 3 license as well.
  • Category 2 Sports Betting License (Racetracks + Mobile/Online): The Category 2 Licenses in Massachusetts allow for retail betting at racetracks and off-track betting facilities and allow one mobile platform per licensee. Raynham Park and Suffolk Downs are the only entities eligible for Category 2 licenses, but they did not go live on the January 31 retail betting launch.
  • Category 3 Sports Betting License (Mobile/Online - Untethered): The Category 3 Licenses in Massachusetts allow for online and mobile sportsbooks, whether partnered with a casino or racetrack or on a standalone basis. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has allocated for up to 7 non-tethered Category 3 licenses in addition to the online sports betting licenses allocated to each casino and racetrack.

Unregulated Sportsbooks in Massachusetts

While there are now several regulated Massachusetts sportsbooks, there are still some unregulated online sports betting operators that some may use. At BetMassachusetts.com, we strongly recommend you avoid using these unregulated offshore sportsbooks, as there is not nearly as much safety, trust and precautions built into the platforms and overall experience.

Bovada

While many bettors may be tempted to use Bovada Massachusetts, it is an offshore, unregulated sportsbook. We highly recommend using sportsbooks that are regulated to offer sports betting in Massachusetts.

BetOnline

BetOnline Massachusetts may appear to be a legal sportsbook just like FanDuel, Caesars Sportsbook and others, but this is another unregulated, offshore sporsbook.

MyBookie

MyBookie Massachusetts is also unregulated. Be cautious of using this instead of trusted, regulated brands such DraftKings, BetMGM and others.

Why Sign Up For Multiple MA Sportsbooks?

Certain sports wagering sites licensed by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission may be better at some things than others. Signing up for more than one is a good strategy to try out different options, and claim multiple welcome bonuses.

Get The Best Line

Not all legal sportsbooks offer the same odds. It's a good idea to use multiple Massachusetts betting sites or apps to ensure maximum returns. The most successful sports wagering experts "shop" around for the best possible odds and betting lines, so consider this strategy when betting in Massachusetts.

Sports Betting Promos

Each sportsbook offers unique sign-up bonuses for new MA sports betting users. Signing up for multiple online sportsbooks means you can take advantage of all betting bonuses, including several NFL betting promos in Massachusetts. Be careful, however, as some offers have a playthrough or rollover requirement.

Keep in mind, however, not all promotions are available for in-person sports betting.

Bet Types

By using multiple Massachusetts betting sites and apps, you learn what sportsbooks offer. Signing up for multiple sportsbooks means you won't be restricted. Some MA sports betting operators feature different options than others, so look around.

Trying Different Operators

It's important to feel comfortable with an online platform when betting with sportsbooks in Massachusetts. Using different mobile and online operators means you decide which platforms you like best. Some sites or apps have a better experience, and it's important to use those you're most comfortable with to bet on sports in Massachusetts.

Sportsbook Rules

Each Massachusetts online sports betting site, app and retail sportsbook has rules. For example, certain sportsbooks don't allow same-game parlays, which means a user cannot place parlays on the same game. Sportsbooks offer users different policies, so try out multiple operators.

Retail Sports Betting vs. Mobile Sports Betting

There are pros and cons of sports betting in-person as opposed to online using Massachusetts mobile sports betting apps. In-person sports betting can provide a more immersive experience for experienced and new bettors, however, going to a physical location can be inconvenient. MA sportsbooks are great for versatility, but it can also be more challenging to get customer support.

Promotions & Offers At Massachusetts Sportsbooks

While it's difficult to cover all Massachusetts sportsbook promo codes, there are common promos for Massachusetts sports bettors.

Risk-free bets are a popular welcome bonus offered by sportsbooks. Here, a sportsbook offers a certain amount of credit to the user if their wager loses. Say, for example, the sportsbook offers $1,000 in bet credits, and you wager $500 on a win for the New England Patriots vs. the Giants. If you lose, $500 in bet credits will be refunded.

A deposit match is another common sports betting promotion. Sportsbooks will match a percentage of your first deposit up to a certain dollar amount to be used as credit. For example, if a first-time deposit promotion matches the entire amount up to $500, you'd be able to deposit $500 for a total of $1,000 in bet credits for the sportsbook.

A referral bonus is when a user can receive credit for getting another person to make an account. Typically, they use a specific link or code when signing up to activate the MA sports betting bonus. If you can convince friends, this is a great way to get extra credits.

An odds boost is a promotion where the sportsbook boosts odds for an event. This gives users higher returns.

Parlay insurance is when the sportsbook covers a leg of a bet. Typically, a sportsbook will return $25 if a parlay is lost by one leg.

Bet Types

Massachusetts sports betting users make a variety of different sports betting wagers on online sportsbooks. Here's some info on these sports wagering types so you can get a better understanding of what Massachusetts sportsbooks offer.

Moneylines

Moneyline refers to a bet on a team to win, and is one of the most popular bet types. For example, if the New England Patriots are playing the Miami Dolphins, the moneyline may be Patriots -150. This means you'd have to bet $150 to win $100. As long as the Patriots win, you'd net $250.

Over/Unders or Totals

An over/under bet or total refers to the amount of scoring for both sides combined. When placing totals, it doesn't matter who wins, all that matters is how many points, goals or runs. For example, if the total for a Boston Celtics game is set at 225.5, this means you would either need 225 points or less, or at least 226 points.

Point Spreads

When you bet on the point spread, run line, or puck line, it's similar to moneylines, except there's a winning margin. Rather than winning, teams must win by a minimum number. For example, if the Boston Red Sox are playing the Yankees, and the run line is Red Sox -1.5, this means you would need them to win by at least 2 runs. If you take the Yankees, you would need them to lose by one run, or win the game.

Parlays

A parlay bet combine multiple selections. This makes for a higher risk but greater returns. Parlays wagers can combine spreads, moneylines, and other wager type. You could β€œparlay” the New England Patriots moneyline, the Boston Celtics spread against the New York Knicks, and one more selection for a β€œthree-leg” parlay. If all win, you'll get a much higher payout than placing each as a single bet. If one pick loses, however, the whole bet loses.

Futures

A futures bet is a bet on a future event, such as the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, World Series, Final Four, College Football Playoff or Stanley Cup. These are available for large sporting events, but also for things like conference championships, player awards, win totals and more. While these bets take longer to settle, the payouts are much higher.

Prop Bets

A prop bet is on a stat or occurrence not related to the final outcome. Examples include player performances, like Tom Brady throwing for over 299.5 yards. Additional examples include total points or assists for basketball players, hits or strikeouts for baseball players, or goals or saves by hockey players.

Live Bets

Live betting means you can bet on sports in Massachusetts as they're happening. The wager types will vary across Massachusetts betting sites, but expect live moneylines, spreads, props and more.

Prohibited Wager Types

Certain types of sports wagering are not allowed per Massachusetts Gaming Commission rules. Massachusetts residents are allowed to bet on college sports, but not on games featuring in-state colleges, unless it's a tournament featuring four or more teams, such as the NCAA Tournament or the College Football Playoff.

This means regular season college sports events featuring in state college teams such as the Boston College Eagles, Harvard Crimson, Boston University Terriers or any other in-state school is NOT PERMITTED for Massachusetts sports betting.
