All eyes will be on Hollywood and the 81st Golden Globe Awards celebration Sunday, as the industry will honor the people who bring stories to life on the big screen. They also will get more well deserved recognition Jan. 5 during the eighth National Screenwriters Day.
BetMassachusetts.com took a break from Massachusetts sports betting and looked at which states have produced the best screenwriters in the history of filmmaking. We utilized The-Numbers.com to collect the top 100 grossing screenwriters in Worldwide Box Office that are from the United States. We then utilized the IMDB’s database to find the birthplace of all 100 screenwriters.
States With The Best Screenwriters
Massachusetts Makes the List
The Bay State is tied with Maryland, Michigan and Pennsylvania for sixth on the list with three, a far cry from New York's top spot of 29. California (22), New Jersey (7), Florida (5) and Illinois (4) rounded out the top five.
High on the list is Andrew Stanton at No. 13. Nine of his movies have averaged more than $627 million and have had a worldwide box office total of more than $5.6 billion. A native of Rockport, Stanton's film work includes “Finding Nemo” and “WALL-E,” which earned him two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature.
Scott Rosenberg of Needham is within the top 50 at No. 47. His 10 movies have averaged more than $314 million with a worldwide box office total of over $3.1 billion. Rosenberg's film inventory includes “Beautiful Girls” (1996), “Kangaroo Jack” (2003), “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (2017) and “Jumanji: The Next Level” (2019).
Just a reminder on key award dates in the not-so-distant future, although you won’t be able to find odds on Massachusetts betting apps: Oscar nominations voting begins Jan. 11-16; the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards will be Jan. 15; and on Jan. 23, the 96th Oscar nominations will be announced for the ceremony March 10.
