As the days get shorter this time of year, it’s easy to get a tad gloomy and long for the days of bountiful sun, though the chill of winter has an unexpected side effect on people living in states like Massachusetts, which has to do with the rate that residents are getting hitched in the year’s colder months.
Occurring between November through Valentine’s Day, there is a period where experts estimate around 40% of all proposals happen. At BetMassachusetts.com, we wanted to break away from Massachusetts sports betting coverage to see what states are most likely to get proposed to during this engagement season. Using Google Trends, we combined the search interest scores for “engagement ring” and “proposal ideas." The search period was a 30-day search conducted on November 20, 2024. We ranked the top 15 states most likely to get proposed to based on the combined search interest scores.
With few states laying claim to the type of romantic autumnal scenery that the Commonwealth does, it’s no wonder that engagement season is a key component of the year in the Bay State, with Massachusetts residents posting the second-highest search interest score of any state when it came to topics related to getting hitched in 2024.

Where Massachusetts Ranks Nationally
Of the 50 states and Washington D.C. that were surveyed, Massachusetts’ total score of 170 points ranked second overall behind national leader Alaska, which had 200 points in total, with the Commonwealth ranking ahead of Pennsylvania (165 points), New Jersey (162 points) and North Carolina (153 points).
Throw in New York (150 points), West Virginia (96 points), Texas (90 points), Georgia and Kentucky (86 points each) and you have the national top 10 when it came to engagement season search interest totals, while Florida, Illinois and Virginia were on the outside looking in with scores of 84 apiece, while Rhode Island was the last state to make the cut with a total score of 83 points.
Still, when it comes to fall-time romance, few states have the type of broad interest in engagement season content that Massachusetts residents do, with the Commonwealth posting a whopper of a search interest score surrounding topics of romance during the year of our lord 2024.
