When it comes to living in the Bay State, many think of the hustle and bustle of the state’s capital city, though it seems Massachusetts residents aren’t quite as stressed out as their neighbors to the south.
That’s because Massachusetts is among the states with the lowest search interest in stress reduction strategies, making the Bay State the fifth least stressed out state in America by our metrics.
April is National Stress Awareness Month. With that in mind, BetMassachusetts.com took a break from Massachusetts sports betting and used Google Trends to see what states were most actively seeking “stress reducing,” to create a list of the top 10 states most stressed out . We also ranked the top 5 most calm, cool, and collected states. Based on this research, Mississippi has the most stressed-out residents, while Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and South Dakota all have the most relaxed locals.
The survey was between Feb. 25 and March 25, 2024. The most chill states were at the bottom of the search interest score list or had a 0-search interest score.

Where Massachusetts Ranks Nationally
Nationally, Massachusetts’ search interest score of three ranks as the fifth lowest nationally, behind Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota and Idaho, which had scores of zero. Conversely, the most stressed out states were Mississippi (100 search interest score), Virginia (38 search interest score), New Jersey (26 search interest score), Delaware and Texas (16 score each).
When it comes to stress-free living, it seems like Massachusetts residents have a few tricks up their sleeves, allowing the state to rank ahead of the hang-loose state of Hawaii and other notoriously laid-back locales like California and Oregon.
