What Draft Pick Is Most Likely For 3-11 NFL Teams?

Fact Checked by Nate Hamilton

A dismal season in New England keeps getting drearier by the week, with the Patriots finding new ways to lose football games each weekend, with Sunday’s 30-17 defeat at the hands of the 7-7 Arizona Cardinals being the latest example of the team’s current gridiron malaise.

In the Pats’ 13-point Week 15 loss in Glendale, Jerod Mayo’s team allowed the hometown Cardinals to hold the ball for more than 34 minutes of game time, while surrendering 395 yards and 21 first downs to Arizona in the double-digit defeat.

After their latest loss, the New England Patriots enter the stretch run of the NFL regular season at 3-11 for the year and a game behind the 4-10 New York Jets for last place in the four-team AFC East, which begs the question of where the franchise will wind up in the 2025 NFL Draft order.

At BetMassachusetts.com, we used The Football Database and our Massachusetts sports betting mindset to determine what draft pick position teams with 3-11 records get since the 2019 NFL season. We only calculated the 3-11 teams' first-selection positions, finding the average and median first-pick positions for the draft following their 3-11 record.

How Have Recent 3-11 NFL Teams Fared Draft Pick Wise?

Since 2019, NFL teams that lost 11 of their first 14 regular season contests went on to score the fourth overall pick, both when it came to the average and the median, which means we can expect Mayo’s bunch to wind up in a similar spot come the draft next spring.

Picking fourth overall would represent the second-highest first-round selection New England’s landed since 2000, landing one spot lower than this year’s fourth overall pick that the club used to take former UNC quarterback Drake Maye.

While the jury’s still out on how well that pick will work out in the long run, Maye has looked decent so far as a rookie, with 1,898 yards and 12 touchdowns through the air, compared with nine interceptions on 279 pass attempts in 10 games played this season.
