How to Bet on the NHL in Massachusetts
Betting on the NHL with Massachusetts sportsbooks is as simple as any other sport. Keep reading as I fill you in on the basics and what you should consider prior to making your first NHL bet.
Choose Your App
The first step is figuring out which Massachusetts betting app you want to use. The main thing to take into consideration here is the types of bets you plan on making. If you just want to place basic wagers like moneylines and totals, you'll find those markets on nearly any operator. If you're looking for markets like player props and period wagers, those can be more difficult to come by so it's worth scrolling through several apps to make sure they have those markets.
Here are a few of my favorite options along with what makes them stand out amongst each other:
- BetMGM MA: Focus on local sports so you can find Bruins bets easier.
- Fanatics MA: FanCash gives you rewards for every bet that you can then use on new merch or bonus bets.
- Caesars MA: Unparalleled options for odds boosts
- DraftKings MA: Best for player prop markets
- FanDuel MA: Live betting
Pick Your Wager
Because NHL betting isn't as popular compared to a sport like football, the market depth and variety tends to not be as expansive. This is why if you're looking for a particular bet type, you might not find it offered at every operator. Here's a list of the most common types of bets you can place on NHL with a brief description of each:
- Moneyline - This is a wager on which team will win the game outright
- Puckline - The puck line is essentially the same thing as the spread in other sports. The unique thing here is that the puck line typically stays at 1.5 no matter what.
- Over/Under - Also called the total, here you're betting on the number of combined goals scored in a given game. If the line is 5.5 and you bet the over, you need at least six total goals for your wager to hit.
- Player Props - Player props are bets on a specific stat for each player. An example would be for Brad Marchand to have over/under 2.5 shots on goal, or Jeremy Swayman to have over/under 26.5 saves.
- Futures - The most common future bets are on things like the winner of the Stanley Cup or Rocket Richard Trophy winner. As the name implies, these bets are on events that won't be determined until later in the season.
