It’s been a few years since the Boston Red Sox have enjoyed postseason success. While the three years since the team made the ALCS is a drop in the bucket compared to the 86 years diehards endured before the 2004 World Series, it’s still leading to some grumbling among fans about the future of the team.
Seeing the team miss out on signing Juan Soto stung some fans. However, the team did make a move to trade for Garrett Crochet, who will likely be their ace on the mound this season. And based on the research we’ve done at BetMassachusetts, your source for the latest Massachusetts sports betting news, the coming years may be very bright on Lansdowne Street.
Our Massachusetts sports betting experts were curious about which teams in the AL East have the greatest potential for success in the coming years based on each franchise’s farm system. Using MLB.com, FanGraphics.com, and Baseball-Reference.com, we created a ranking system factoring in the average future value of the top 10 prospects for each team, overall farm system ranking, and number of players in the top 100 prospects.
Ranking AL East Farm System Potential
Rank | Team | Score |
1 | Boston Red Sox | 76.5 |
2 | Tampa Bay Rays | 74.6 |
3 | Baltimore Orioles | 73.5 |
4 | New York Yankees | 53.5 |
5 | Toronto Blue Jays | 48 |
The Red Sox have four prospects listed on MLB.com’s Top 100 list for 2025. Several teams do have more players, but no one can match Boston for the quality of their prospects.
Three players – outfielder Roman Anthony (No. 3), shortstop Marcelo Mayer (No. 7) and utility player Kristian Campbell (No. 10) – rank among the top 10 in the league. The Detroit Tigers are the only other team with two in the top 10, and Baltimore and Colorado are the only others with two in the top 20.
CBS Sports lists all three in its top 10, too, with the 20-year-old Anthony their top prospect and Campbell, 22, third. Those two could start the season in the majors, or come up shortly after the season starts, and CBS projects Mayer, also 22, to get the call up in the summer.
Boston’s prospect depth was essential in helping them get Crochet from the White Sox, and the fact they were able to do that and not sell off the farm system bodes well for the team’s chances in the years ahead.
Red Sox 2025 Odds
Relying on that much youth may not lead to success this season, but oddsmakers still have high hopes for the Red Sox heading into 2025. Caesars Massachusetts Sportsbook gives Boston odds of -135 to make the playoffs this season. That equates to an implied probability of 57.5%.
The Red Sox most likely route to the postseason is as one of the three wild cards considering they play in the gauntlet that is the AL East. BetMGM oddsmakers give the team odds of +425, or a 19% chance, to win the division, with the Yankees (+110) and Orioles (+240) having shorter odds.
Think the Red Sox could ride the youth movement to a World Series title? FanDuel Massachusetts sportsbook gives Boston odds of +2700 to win the team’s first title since 2018.
