For the first time in a quarter-century, the New England Patriots will have a different head coach on the sideline this fall, as Bill Belichick exits and his one-time protégé Jerod Mayo takes over.
Mayo was named the newest head coach of the franchise in January, becoming the 15th leader in the club’s 66-year history and having a shot at running the team that he played for from 2008 to 2015.
Now, Mayo and the Pats’ face extraordinarily long odds of succeeding in their first season together.
That road to redemption begins with a Week 1 away matchup against Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 8, before returning home to host the Seattle Seahawks at Gillette Stadium the following weekend.
BetMassachusetts.com, home to all thing Massachusetts sports betting, devised a point system to determine New England’s toughest stretch of games in 2024.
Points were given for the following:
1 pt – Divisional Opponent
1 pt – Road Game
1 pt – Primetime Game (TNF, SNF, MNF)
2 pt – Short Week
2 pt – Team #11-20 on ESPN’s NFL Power Rankings
3 pt – Team #1-10 on ESPN’s NFL Power Rankings

Week | Opponent | Points |
3 | at New York Jets | 7 |
4 | at San Francisco 49ers | 4 |
5 | vs. Miami Dolphins | 4 |
According to our metrics, the Pats’ toughest three-game stretch this fall will be sandwiched between their Week 3 clash with the New York Jets at the Meadowlands before flying west to play the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers the following week.
Throw in a return to Foxborough to host the talented Miami Dolphins in Week 5 and you have the full recipe for brutality that Mayo and company face in the early season gauntlet that awaits the Pats’ in Weeks 3-5.
With a strong showing against those three teams, New England could turn a collective corner as a team and churn their way towards a potential playoff berth in 2024, while losses against New York, San Francisco and/or Miami could potentially tank any chance of success in Year One of the Mayo era in New England.
One way or another, it’s a new era for professional football in New England, with the Patriots looking to return to the heyday of the team’s Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era, beginning with the team’s early season clashes against teams like the Bengals, Seahawks, Jets, 49ers and Dolphins.
