Barstool Background

Legislation for legal sports wagering in Massachusetts was approved on Aug. 1, 2022 and signed into law by then-Gov. Charlie Baker on Aug. 10.

On Dec. 21, the MGC approved and awarded a temporary, one-year retail license to Plainridge Park Casino, where Barstool Sports has operated a temporary sportsbook on property. Its main Barstool Sportsbook & Restaurant (located at the former location of Flutie's Sports Pub) will open this spring.

After two days of presentations, public discussions and executive sessions, the MGC unanimously approved Barstool for a temporary Category 3 (mobile) sports wagering operator license on Jan. 4.
