PENN Entertainment’s online sports betting platform, Barstool Sportsbook, is set to launch its mobile app in Massachusetts (the birthplace of Barstool Sports) at 10 a.m. Friday with five other mobile providers. The mobile launch will mark the 16th state in which Barstool Sportsbook is live and operational.
The other Massachusetts sports betting app providers to launch Friday are:
- BetMGM
- Caesars Sportsbook
- DraftKings
- FanDuel
- WynnBET
Barstool's retail sportsbook launched at PENN’s Plainridge Park Casino property in Plainridge on Jan. 31 and its mobile app also will be tethered there.
Launch Day Happenings
To celebrate the launch, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, and several other Barstool personalities, including Big Cat, Hank, Jersey Jerry, Elio and Ryan Whitney, will be on the ground in Boston on March 10 and 11. They will be offering several Massachusetts sports betting promos, as will all other legal operators.
The crew will be flipping the cameras on themselves and hosting a live stream on Barstool.tv and Barstool Sportsbook’s social channels as they watch hours of sports throughout the weekend and legally wager. Fans can tune in to hear their real-time picks, game reactions and non-stop commentary.
When Will Revenue Figures Be Announced?
Massachusetts sportsbooks are expected to post an annual handle of about $5 billion, according to a story last month at BetMassachusetts.com.
Official monthly handle/revenue figures for the state will be released by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) on/about the 15th of every month, with mobile expected to make its first appearance in April’s report.
Barstool Background
Legislation for legal sports wagering in Massachusetts was approved on Aug. 1, 2022 and signed into law by then-Gov. Charlie Baker on Aug. 10.
On Dec. 21, the MGC approved and awarded a temporary, one-year retail license to Plainridge Park Casino, where Barstool Sports has operated a temporary sportsbook on property. Its main Barstool Sportsbook & Restaurant (located at the former location of Flutie's Sports Pub) will open this spring.
After two days of presentations, public discussions and executive sessions, the MGC unanimously approved Barstool for a temporary Category 3 (mobile) sports wagering operator license on Jan. 4.
