An unusual, yet reasonable request was heard by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) on Thursday.
The sports wagering division of the MGC presented a request during public meeting No. 551 to commissioners from Boston-based DraftKings Sportsbook to void future bets on the Boston Celtics from a customer who had died.
The customer had placed nine (9) NBA Future wagers for this year, all on the Boston Celtics to not only win the Eastern Conference championship but the NBA title as well, totaling $106,100.
According to the MGC, their spouse wanted the bets to be voided to facilitate the return of the money to their estate. DraftKings notified the MGC a little more than a month ago on March 7 regarding a request from an attorney representing the spouse of the deceased account holder.

During Thursday's meeting, DraftKings requested that the wagers be voided pursuant to state regulation 205 CMR 238.35(2) Cancelled or Voided Wagers and confirmed that all necessary regulatory requirements had been met. The company also stated they believe that honoring such requests in exceptional circumstances strengthens public trust and upholds industry integrity.
By a 5-0 unanimous vote, the MGC voided all the wagers on Thursday.
Friday Night Matchup vs. Charlotte

The Celtics have been kind to bettors in the Massachusetts sports betting market recently and Friday is no exception as the Celtics are 19.5-point favorites and a whopping -2400 money line favorite on DraftKings.
