As the NFL regular season enters October, Massachusetts sports betting fans in the New England region are scared this might be their new reality.
Utilizing Champs or Chumps, BetMassachusetts.com looked at how teams ended up the rest of the NFL season after starting their season with an 1-3 record since 2012. Eighty-two teams have started 1-3 in the last 10 years. Here are the lowlights:
Performance of NFL Teams Starting 1-3
The Patriots playoff odds are +400 after the team’s slow start. New England’s Super Bowl title odds have slipped to +12500.
Patriots Coming Off Blowout Loss
The Patriots are coming off their worst loss of the season — a 38-3 road rout to Dallas last Sunday. It marked Bill Belichick’s worst setback during his 29 seasons as a head coach, 24 with New England. It was so bad, he pulled quarterback and former Alabama Heisman Trophy winner Mac Jones in the second half. Belichick is one win away from 300 career wins, joining George Halas and Don Shula as the only NFL coaches with 300 career regular-season victories. The way it's going it might take some time.
History — and Massachusetts betting apps odds — are not on the Patriots side, as just 11 of 82 teams (13.4%) since 2012 have made the playoffs starting 1-3. Two of 11 teams (18.2%) won a Wild-Card round and just twice has a team tried to advance to a Divisional round to no avail.
Ironically, this is the second straight season where the Pats have started 1-3. Detroit, Las Vegas, Carolina, Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Washington all joined the Pats in 2022 and all missed the postseason.
The Patriots have averaged an uninspiring 13.5 points per game and have not generated any consistent offense even in a 15-10 road win against the New York Jets in Week 3. At BetMGM Massachusetts, the Patriots are 1.5-point and -125 money line favorites over New Orleans (2-2) at 1 p.m., Sunday. The game’s over/under point total is 39.5.
