After a disappointing end to the 2022 season, the Patriots shook things up this offseason. According to oddsmakers at Massachusetts sportsbooks, these changes have not helped their team improve much.
The most important move they made was firing offensive coordinator Matt Patricia and hiring Bill O’Brien to take over the play-calling duties. This is O’Brien’s second stint with the team and he should be a massive upgrade for Mac Jones and the entire offense.
Outside of just the coaching staff, the Patriots also moved on from several veteran players on offense, including Jakobi Meyers, Nelson Agholor, Damien Harris, and Jonnu Smith. They brought in Mike Gesicki and JuJu Smith-Schuster to help the offense, but a Patriots fanbase might say it doesn’t feel like the roster has seen a dramatic upgrade in talent this offseason.
Without any big splashes made to the roster via free agency or trade, have the odds shifted in one way or another for the Patriots this offseason? And are there any Massachusetts sportsbook promos available for those who want to wager on the Pats?
Let’s look at notable comings and goings this offseason.
- Notable Free-Agent Additions: WR JuJu Smith-Schuster, TE Mike Gesicki, OT Riley Reiff
- Notable Free-Agent Losses: WR Jakobi Meyers, RB Damien Harris, WR Nelson Agholor
- Top Draft Picks: CB Christian Gonzalez, DE Keion White, LB Marte Mapu.
As expected, the Patriots playoff chances are near the bottom of the league at various sportsbooks. Moving forward, BetMassachusetts.com is monitoring the roster changes during the offseason with a critical eye, and will continue to do so leading up to the 2023 NFL Season.
New England Patriots 2023 Super Bowl Odds
Above is a look at New England’s Super Bowl odds at DraftKings over the last few months. Be sure to claim the DraftKings Massachusetts promo code if you plan to wager there.
After the opening lines were set, the Patriots’ odds jumped up to +6600. But after a strong draft class that included arguably the best cornerback (Christian Gonzalez), they settled back down to +5000. That’s about where they should be, given that the Patriots have been a competitive team over the last few seasons, even without Tom Brady.

New England Patriots 2023 AFC East Odds
The bigger issue for the Patriots is their division as it projects to be one of the best in NFL history. Above are the odds for New England to win the AFC East during the 2023-2024, again via BetMGM.
There was a huge shift in the odds for the Patriots to win the division since the end of the 2022 season and that had everything to do with the New York Jets acquiring Aaron Rodgers. With the Bills and Dolphins already making the playoffs in 2022, the addition of Rodgers adds another contender to the AFC East. The Patriots are a distant fourth to win the division as they have not won the division since Tom Brady left after the 2019 season.
Marcus’s Verdict
The AFC East might be the most competitive division in NFL history with the Bills, Dolphins and Jets all appearing to have favorable Super Bowl odds. All three teams have complete rosters with defenses that should rank inside the top 10 in the league.
However, don’t rule out the possibility of the Patriots making some noise in this division. They were just a few plays away from making the playoffs last year and that was with one of the league’s worst offenses. If Bill O’Brien can get the offense back to a respectable level, the Patriots could easily win 10+ games and steal the division.
At +750 to win the AFC East, the Patriots aren’t a bad longshot bet given their talent on defense and Bill Belichick on the sideline. And if you are bullish on the Patriots, betting them at +5000 to win the Super Bowl is pretty intriguing given their track record.
